Why are milk cartons square and soft drink containers round?

According to Robert H. Frank’s book The Economic Naturalist (which I found on Design Observer), it’s because milk needs to be constantly refrigerated, while soft drinks can be stored in the open. Square containers occupy less refrigerator space.

Who knew?
